Garrett Clayton

Education Liaison for IFAC TC 4.2. Mechatronic Systems

Bio. Dr. Garrett M. Clayton received his BSME from Seattle University in 2001 and his MSME and PhD in ME from the University of Washington in 2003 and 2008 respectively.

Garrett's research interests focus on instrumentation and control for high-speed nanotechnologies. Specifically, Garrett is interested in scanning probe microscopes (SPMs), which are key enabling tools in emerging nanotechnologies. Within this field he has developed a novel image-based control strategy that exploits the existing imaging capabilities of SPMs to increase operating speed. In the future Garrett plans to continue his work in image-based control and apply this method to nano-fabrication and nano-biological studies.

Garrett's teaching interests are focused in the areas of design, dynamics, controls, and mechatronics. He has held positions as adjunct professor at Seattle University (2007-2008) and as a course instructor at the University of Washington (various quarters 2005-2008).

Garrett is a member of ASME, IEEE, and ASEE.
